Frederick Wheeler Hinckley, an attorney and later mayor of South Portland had quite the side hustle: designing an building houses.
He began what would eventually become Sylvan Sites in 1907 with just one house which he built for his bride. He went on to build a total of 37 homes, designing each himself in many styles including Spanish, Tudor, Colonial Revival, Italianate, and Craftsman.
